When news reached the U.S. Navy in late 1861 that the Confederate Navy was working to convert the former USS Merrimack into an ironclad warship, an emergency order went out for the design of a Union ironclad. This 1903 statue by Jonathan Scott Hartley (1845–1912) depicts the esteemed Swedish-American engineer and inventor John Ericsson (1803–1889), who helped to revolutionize military-maritime technology with his ironclad warship, the Monitor. The latter was also ironclad and designed by the Swedish born John Ericsson and his Monitor helped the Union to win the civil war (1861-1865). This blog is about what I found of memorials for this event. In Boston, we visited the USS Constitution Museum and were aboard the “ Old Ironside ” as the USS Constitution is called. Designed by Swedish engineer John Ericsson, the vessel had a low profile, rising from the water only 18 inches.

By this time, the Union had completed seven ironclad gunboats of the City class, and was about to complete USS Monitor, an innovative design proposed by the Swedish inventor John Ericsson. The Union was also building a large armored frigate, USS New Ironsides, and the smaller USS Galena.

John Ericsson (July 31, 1803 – March 8, 1889) was a Swedish-American inventor and mechanical engineer, as was his brother Nils Ericson.

He was active in England and the United States. Ericsson collaborated on the design of the railroad steam locomotive Novelty, which competed in the Rainhill Trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which were won by inventor George Stephenson's (1781-1848), Rocket.
